Young Artists Debut!

The 28th Young Artists Debut! Winners are...

On April 9th, 2022, YAD Program Director & Conductor Jonathan DeBruyn announced the winners of the 28th Young Artists Debut! Competition and Concerto Concert. Live auditions were held at First Christian Church, with DeBruyn and a panel of judges including Sandra Hyslop, Elizabeth Eklund, Yoko Greeney, and Hamilton Cheifetz. “I would like to thank our esteemed panel of judges for their time and expertise,” said DeBruyn. “We had a remarkable pool of applicants this year, and selecting six winners was an enormously difficult task. We could not have done it without their help.”  The Young Artists Debut! promotes the development and performance of young artists in the greater Portland region.

The six gifted soloists, aged 12-17, distinguished themselves from a group of more than two dozen applicants. They will showcase their extraordinary talents alongside members of the Oregon Symphony and Oregon Ballet Theatre Orchestras on Friday, November 18, 2022, at First United Methodist Church in Portland. In addition to performing at the Young Artists Debut! Concert on November 18th, each winner will receive valuable career-building skills, honoraria, and will be invited to participate in other Cognizart programs and masterclasses.  In addition to their continued work under the guidance of their private teachers, they will also receive individualized coaching sessions from Maestro DeBruyn over the next several months. During these sessions they will discuss the interpretation of their concertos, how to work as a soloist with an orchestra, and receive guidance in the development of their musical careers.

This year’s finalists will join the ranks of past Young Artists Debut! performers, many of whom have gone on to win international recognition and perform with some of the most prestigious symphonies and opera companies around the world. Violinist Laura Marzadori, a 2005 performer, is currently the concertmaster of the world-famous La Scala Opera House in Milan, Italy. Bassoonist Keith Bunke, who performed in 2009, now holds the rank of Principal Bassoon of the Chicago Symphony.

The 26th & 27th Young Artists Debut! Winners, who performed on November 19th, 2021, were:

We are continuing to expand the Young Artists Debut! program to include more local artists and teachers in the developmental and artistic process of the YAD! program. • Masterclasses with renowned musicians.

  • More performances and community outreach opportunities for participants.

  • Career development guidance and opportunities.

  • Recitals will be programmed and directed by the students themselves.

  • 2 Concerts:

    • A “Showcase Concert” in June.

    • A larger concert in the fall with a chamber orchestra/small orchestra.

  • Feedback from a panel of classical music experts.
