Orchestra Nova Northwest and Cognizart Merge to Expand Arts Education in Portland

Two Leading Arts Organizations Unite to Amplify Youth Arts Opportunities

Portland, OR — September 17, 2025 — Orchestra Nova Northwest (ONN), a leading professional orchestra known for innovative performances, has merged with Cognizart by MetroArts Inc., an acclaimed youth arts education organization. Together, they will broaden opportunities for student artists across the Portland Metro Area, with a focus on historically under-resourced communities.

As part of this merger, Shannon Emory will continue as Executive Director of Cognizart, as she has for the last eight successful years, while also serving as the new CEO of Orchestra Nova Northwest, providing strategic leadership and vision for both organizations. Orchestra Nova Northwest’s recently appointed Executive Director Adam Eccleston will work collaboratively with Emory.

This partnership also builds on both organizations’ longstanding commitment to arts education. ONN consistently connects with young artists in classrooms and workshops—often inviting internationally renowned soloists to work with students—while Cognizart brings decades of experience cultivating creativity, critical thinking, and confidence in youth through innovative arts education programs.

“By joining forces, we’re able to connect the concert hall with the classroom in a way that truly enriches both,” said Adam Eccleston, Executive Director of Orchestra Nova Northwest. “Our shared vision is that every child in Portland can share in the joy of making and experiencing art.”

“This partnership expands what’s possible,” added Emory. “Together, we can nurture creativity, inspire young people, and show them that the arts offer a lifelong throughline—fueling imagination, growth, and confidence at every stage of life.”

The merger will be officially introduced during the week leading up to ONN’s opening concert of the season, LINEAGE. There will be an invitation-only celebration, as well as a public, ticketed event at the upcoming Listen & Learn on Wednesday, September 24, where attendees can hear about the organizations’ shared vision while experiencing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of ONN in rehearsal.

Tickets and details are available on the websites of both Orchestra Nova Northwest and Cognizart.

Our History

Since 1993, Cognizart by MetroArts Inc. has championed the vital importance of arts education in children's development.  Our teaching for creativity programs ignite children's natural creativity, well-being, and self-confidence while also playing a role in social inclusion.

Over our 30-year history, we have positively impacted the lives of thousands of children.  We have devoted much of our efforts to delivering scholarships and free artistic opportunities to children from underserved communities.

In 2020, we changed our name to Cognizart by MetroArts Inc., which more fully embraces our "cognizant" approach to delivering "arts" education.
